DYFI Slams Mallareddy Institutions Over Holiday for Film Release

Hyderabad, October 26: The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) Telangana State Vice-President M.D. Javeed has demanded government action against Mallareddy Educational Institutions over the reported declaration of a holiday on October 30 in connection with the release of actor Venkatesh’s film Aadarsha Kutumbam.

Javeed said the decision, reportedly announced by the institution’s Vice-Chairperson Preethi Reddy, raised questions about the priorities of private educational institutions and the use of college campuses for film promotions and commercial activities.

In a statement, he said students attended colleges to pursue education and build their futures, while parents paid substantial fees expecting quality education and better career opportunities. Institutions should focus on academic standards, employment prospects and student welfare rather than declaring holidays to mark film releases, he said.

“Students’ futures are not entertainment. Watching films is not wrong, but educational institutions must ensure that their decisions serve students’ interests rather than commercial promotional activities,” Javeed said.

He urged the Telangana Council of Higher Education and Education Minister Revanth Reddy to intervene, examine whether the reported holiday declaration complied with applicable rules and take appropriate action.

Javeed alleged that the commercialisation of education was encouraging the use of college campuses for promotional events at the expense of academic responsibilities. He also raised concerns about student safety and the possibility of exposure to harmful influences, including drugs, cannabis and alcohol, during certain campus events.

Referring to an accident at MVSR Engineering College in which two students reportedly died, Javeed criticised what he described as the government’s failure to take adequate action. He questioned whether sufficient attention was being given to campus safety and accountability while private educational institutions continued to organise events.

He said the incidents raised broader concerns about the responsibility of the government and private educational institution managements to ensure safe campus environments and compliance with regulations.

Javeed demanded that the state government establish accountability, enforce applicable educational rules and direct colleges to prioritise academics, student welfare and campus safety over commercial entertainment and promotional activities.
