Singareni explores partnerships with US firms in critical minerals, energy sectors

The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) has expressed its willingness to collaborate with American companies in critical minerals exploration, advanced mining technologies, energy storage and data centre infrastructure.

A delegation from the US Consulate in Hyderabad, led by Meredith Meisler, Political and Economic Chief, met Singareni Chairman and Managing Director Buddaprakash Jyoti at Singareni Bhavan on Friday to explore opportunities for technology partnerships, investments, joint ventures and research cooperation.

During the meeting, the CMD outlined Singareni’s plans to expand into the critical minerals sector and said the company was keen to work with international technology firms and research institutions. He highlighted its mining experience and ongoing efforts to identify new business opportunities with support from the State and Central governments.

The US delegation expressed interest in connecting Singareni with American companies working in critical minerals. It sought details about the Geo-Science Laboratory at Kothagudem and its research capabilities, particularly the potential to recover rare earth elements and other valuable minerals from overburden generated by open-cast mines.

The delegation also indicated that US companies were interested in exploring business and technology partnerships in the sector and invited Singareni to participate in a critical minerals conference scheduled in the United States in April.

Data centres and pumped storage projects

The discussions also covered opportunities for setting up data centres in Telangana, driven by growing demand for computing infrastructure from artificial intelligence applications. The US representatives said American companies were exploring suitable locations in the State, including areas where Singareni operates.

Singareni officials presented the company’s proposed pumped storage power projects, which are planned at suitable locations, including closed open-cast mines. The projects are intended to put abandoned mining areas to productive use and provide power during peak-demand periods. Their potential to support energy-intensive data centres was also discussed.

The availability of water from the Godavari was highlighted as an advantage for developing such projects. The delegation noted Telangana’s existing data centre infrastructure and the interest of additional American companies in expanding their presence in the State.

At the meeting, the CMD invited the US Consulate team to visit Singareni’s mines and the Geo-Science Laboratory at Kothagudem to understand the company’s operations, research facilities and investment opportunities.

The US delegation included Srimali Kari and Shiba Tripathi, Political and Economic Specialists, and Sunel Kumar, Commercial Specialist. Singareni officials present included Director (Projects and Planning) K. Venkateswarlu and senior representatives from its marketing, business development, exploration and power projects divisions.

The discussions mark an effort to identify areas of international cooperation in critical minerals, mining technology, energy storage and digital infrastructure.
